Keeping Honeybees Happy During a Heatwave
As temperatures rise, our buzzing friends need a little extra care to thrive.

When the summer sun beats down and the heatwave rolls in, I find myself checking on my honeybees more often. These little creatures work tirelessly, and during extreme temperatures, they need a bit of extra attention to stay healthy and happy.
First and foremost, ensure your hives are well-ventilated. I like to check that the entrance is clear and that there’s adequate airflow. If the hive feels stuffy, I sometimes add a few small openings to help with ventilation. This allows the bees to cool down and keeps the humidity in check.
Providing a reliable water source is another crucial step. I fill shallow dishes with fresh water and add some stones or marbles. This gives the bees a safe place to land and drink without the risk of drowning. I make sure to refresh the water daily, especially during the hottest days.
Shade is a blessing during a heatwave. If possible, I place my hives in a location that receives afternoon shade. If that’s not an option, I’ve seen folks use lightweight cloths or umbrellas to create a bit of shelter. Just be sure that whatever you use doesn’t obstruct airflow.
Lastly, keep an eye on their food supply. During hot weather, bees can consume more honey to maintain their energy levels. If you notice your bees are running low, consider feeding them a sugar syrup. A mixture of one part sugar to one part water can help them replenish their stores.
Taking these steps not only helps your bees survive the heat but also keeps them thriving, which is a joy to see. Happy bees are productive bees, and that means more honey for us all!
