Keeping Chickens Safe During Hawk Season

As the leaves start to change and the air turns crisp, I can’t help but notice the hawks circling above. This time of year, they’re on the lookout for an easy meal, and our chickens can be vulnerable if we’re not careful.

To keep my flock safe, I take a few practical steps to ensure they’re well-protected. First, I make sure their coop is sturdy and secure. A solid structure with a roof helps keep hawks at bay, and I check for any weak spots that might need reinforcing.

Next, I provide plenty of cover in their run. I’ve planted some shrubs and placed a few low-hanging branches around, creating a natural barrier for them to hide under. Chickens feel much safer when they have places to duck and cover if they sense danger.

Another effective measure is to have a few decoys around. I’ve found that placing a plastic owl or even some shiny objects can deter hawks. They don’t like the idea of competing with larger predators, so this can help keep them at a distance.

Lastly, I try to supervise my chickens when they’re out free-ranging. If I’m outside, I can keep an eye on the sky and call them back to safety if I see a hawk approaching. It’s a bit of extra work, but it’s worth it to keep my girls safe.

With these simple precautions, I can enjoy watching my chickens roam freely while knowing they’re protected. It’s all about finding that balance between freedom and safety, and I find joy in keeping my flock happy and healthy.
